MCEI CONNECT EVENT HAS THE
WOW FACTOR!
MCEI is determined to provide learning in an
atmosphere of fun and fellowship, and boy, did they
succeed!
ICE BREAKER

The ‘International Marketing
and Networking’ event on November 15th 2005 went off
with a bang! Or should I say went off with a ‘swing and a
swivel’……. As participants arrived they were greeted by Azura, a
belly dancer, who, with a swish of her hips and a flurry of her
costume, made sure all guests were truly in the mood to learn about
marketing at an international level and approach the session with
real ‘fire in the belly’!(excuse the pun)
KEY SPEAKER
Eighty attendees were delighted with the dance and were in a
relaxed and fun mood by the time the guest speaker David Ch’ng gave
his presentation. David provided lots of factual information,
covered in a coating of amusing and hysterical anecdotes! The
audience were in stitches of laughter as David referred to his case
studies with wit and innuendo.
One case study in particular
compared motor bikes and their riders, with Vespers and their
riders. Discussing the needs of the customers, David pointed out
that the "bikies" related to the images of sex, violence and
aggression, whereas Vesper riders were family orientated; and were
slow, careful riders. He then pointed out what would happen if the
communication became confused between the promotional
advertisements, by both being treated the same – as if both were
motor bikes. The mind boggled!
On another occasion when
speaking about branding, David compared himself and his marriage –
pointing out if he did not look after his marriage and put time
into flowers, remembering anniversaries and other romantic pursuits
– then his wife may decide to change her brand!

• David Ch’ng is Associate Professor at
Melbourne Business School - Melbourne University
• Previously the Marketing Manager for Unilever Pty
Ltd
• Trained by the United Nations to support small
businesses with their marketing strategies
• FANTASTIC presenter!

SUPPORT
The City of Manningham co-hosted the evening and provided
wonderful food and wine for guests on their arrival. Keeping in
theme with the ‘belly dancer’ (a tribute to the newest MCEI Chapter
to be commenced in Dubai) the food had a definite Eastern
flavour.
Definitely Chocolate provided a selection of hand made
chocolates for supper after the completion of the seminar.

TESTIMONIAL
And what did attendees think of the night? This testimonial is
indicative of the comments received:-
“Thank you so much for the
invitation to the inaugural MCEI Connect Event. You created an
excellent atmosphere (the ice-breaker ‘belly dancer’ helped
everyone to relax). The door prize of a colour TV was awesome!
The choice of speaker was also excellent! I particularly liked
that he confirmed the principles of marketing are always the same,
wherever you are and
whoever you're marketing to. It was a fantastic group of
people!!! I had a ball!!!”
